I've been seeing alot of younger vieja specimen around going by different species names but looking similar, the best example I can think of is zonatum and bifasciatum species. How can you tell the difference between species that look similar when they're young?

It is very difficult to impossible for even the most experience people. That's why it is so important to keep such fish separated. Hybridization in these species is rampant.

Even some of the adult specimens are impossible to tell apart with certainty without knowledge of collection areas.
