How to test wood stand strength ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
when I was looking for something like this, searching google I found an article from Popular Mechanics from the 60's... they did a test and an 8' 2x4 stud could hold something like 4,800lbs before collapsing. Now 2x4s are made from different wood and they're not actually 2"x4" as they were back then, but they can still hold a lot of weight.

not sure about other kinds of wood stands.

Anyone know how to calculate strength of wood stands? Possibly how much weight it can hold? Any formulas or what not ? Or anyone a mechanical engineer that could help

A 2x4 stood vertically can hold 1850 pounds and 440 pounds laid on its side. Now, 2x4s are really 1.5x3.5s. From this information you could calculate the strength of other peices of wood like 1x6s or 2x12s
