If possible, separate, detailed instructions on how to train gars to accept both types of food.

Thanks:)

when i first got my gar he didnt really eat to much, but i try to spot feed him. where ever he is in the tank drop it next to, or in front of him. the falling food should make him snap at it and he will realize that its food. i usually feed smelt and shrimp. my gar still has not eatin any pellets, but i still try to feed it to him. he will be munching out in no time.

thanks a bunch:)

I have two florida gar's. One is mine thats 14" in my 125 gallon and the other is my girlfriends thats 9" in her 55 gallon (for now).

My guy, I have trained him to eat frozen foods out of my hands. Same thing with my silver arowana. I feed them Silver slides and krill. The gar even eats the krill right off the top...

I am in the process of training my girlfriends to eat from my hand and its going pretty well. I have had him for about 3 weeks now and he has eaten from my hand twice. Key is, to go for a few days without feeding him, then give him frozen foods. Also, I noticed that the gar's are exceptional eaters when the lights are off....

Start with silversides, since they resemble minnows, which I'm assuming your gar might currently be eating. Most LFS feed minnows. There really are a ton of threads on this topic. Try going to the gar forum and then searching. It should pull multiple posts on the topic. I've written about it often because it's a very common topic, since young gar are so picky and difficult to get to switch from live to prepared or frozen foods.

take fishing line and a small fishing hook and cut the hook part off leaving the tiny holding barbs. pierce the food object with the tiny barbs and fish it around your tank. ive never missed with this technique. for some skittish fish turn the room lights off and do it from a distance so they cant see you...
