I just found that my jack dempsey has ich. The tank has a bkg which I know is copper sensitive. Do I need to use the medication at half strength? Any help is appreciated

I treat ick by raising the heat in the tank to low to mid 80's and some aqua salt. I try not to use chemicals. If the bkg can handle the rise in temp + salt thats the way to go, unless you have another tank you can move JD to for treatment. Hope that helps

As stated, raise temp above 84F. You can treat with salt or use methylene blue or Maracyn 2. These 2 meds contain no copper and are safe enough to use on fish eggs.

ide also do a few good water changes, it helps physically remove the parasites dead or alive free floating. and many cases of ick are from lapse in water quality. just beware not to overly stress the fish ( ie dumping new water in a rush and stirring up the fish ect )
