I Have a 55 gallon tank with an african black knife and 5 med size Gourami's...And ofcourse the gouramis , i believe, brought in the darn ick/ich/white spot. I have had ick on fish before...i find that none of the medicine works...and i am sick of it changing the color of my tank water and having to take out my carbon.

I here one way to treat it is turn up the temp. and add aqaurium salt....i want to try this....but how will this effect my african black knife?...Do i have to pull out my carbon for this treatment....?

bump the temp to 82-84
add 1 tsp per gallon of aquarium salt to start
i think the herbal ich remedies work well personally tho...

this has always worked well for me
if you just bump up the temperature to 82ish or even 84 (speeds up the life cycle of the ichthyosis protozoan and you need it to go through the free swimming cycle for the medecine to kill it)
give an average dose of the meds everyday until it has been completely gone for 3 days and the do a 25 to 50% water change and you are good to go :D
you should remove your carbon, but it wont discolor your water :D

Do i need to take out the carbon in my filter while i use the salt treatment...or should i turn off the filter completely...i mean...won't the salt kill benefical bacteria that is at the mouth of my h.o.b. filter?

You can leave the filter running with the carbon, it's fine.

Personally, we use nothing but Jungle products. We found that the Ick Gaurd (in the powder form) works wonders! It still turns your tank blue, but we saved alot of fish with it. And all Jungle products are safe to use together as long as it doesn't say other wise.
