So Cal
Hey MFK,
I have this cool little electric yellow who all of a sudden has an inflamed mouth.
His gills will constantly stay out as if he was flaring them, but it's to the point where he can't eat the pellets off the ground; and he keeps trying to pick them up.

I thought it could be some type of fungus or external disease but then I also saw long white poop...is it hex or some other parasite?

I put him in a quarantine and only have General cure available at the moment. Any info on what to do would be appreciated!

Are there anymore African Cichlids in the aquarium?

Poor little guy! Perhaps duanes duanes , kno4te kno4te or Gourami Swami Gourami Swami could help if Thomas isn't able to..

Until then can you please give a little more info? Things like
Tank size (display and QT)
Readings for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate? PH, GH and kh if you know them?
Water change schedule - how much and how often?
Feeding schedule - what do you feed, how much and how often?
Décor and substrate?
Tank mate species and sizes?
How long has the tank been set up?
Filtration - type of filter, media, etc?

I know its a lot to answer but it will help others to help you.

If you have the time, check out this and keep it handy for future reference as this will also help others to help you more:

Good luck. :)

Edit: and in the mean time, keep that water as clean as you can! :D

Thanks for the reply...I'll try to answer as much as possible...

He was in a 10g all by himself
Tanks was cycled before hand w/ Stability and Prime
Filtration was Aquaclear 50 w/lots of bio media
Fed only NLS thera A twice a day
Weekly water change ~30%
Unfortunately I don't know the readings as I dumped out the tank and now quarantined him in a 5g...but I always use Prime and stability to ensure it helps

But Now that I read that link I think because I had a live plant in there for the very first time in my fish-hobby that could have been it...
I have a lot of experience treating internal diseases but never external (if this is it) maybe some paraguard could help? What can cause this from live plants?

Any help on how to treat would be much appreciated as I love this little guy! He was so interactive!

Edit: he also now is having white poop...out of nowhere. I'm guessing he had some dormant parasite living in him from the LFS I got him from and stress of the quarantine maybe brought it out? But why the inflamed lips and constant flared gills?
Can't do epsom salt treatment because he can't eat due to his lips...only have metro and prazi for that

Unfortunately I can't help with this. But hopefully one of the more knowledgeable members can help.

Actually, Charney Charney might be able to help you as well.

Good luck mate. He's a cute fish, I hope he gets better for you. :)

Yeah I was going to say the same thing, looks like it has a mouth full of eggs/fry to me.

Otherwise it looks like a healthy fish. What is the behavior like? How long have you had it, and was it in with other African mbuna before it was with you?
White poop could mean hexamita. could also be shedding intestinal layer due to various causes, not always parasites.

I was going to ask about holding eggs too. looks like a female. Pull her out of the water and look into her mouth to see if there are eggs or fry

Yes I'm a noon with African Cichlids but it also looked like he/she was holding. That's why I asked the op was any other Cichlids were in the aquarium.
