Hi

i have just noticed my bristlenose pleco had a little 2-3 mm red spot, i firstly thought it was goldfish flake stuck in there or a fish lice, i took him out to check out and it turns to be a wound on the skin.

i have no idea on what to treat it and how, aquarium salt is bad for catfish and other scaleless fish.

thanks

I wouldn't worry too much unless the fish starts acting sick, they are normally pretty good at healing themselves as long as the water is kept very clean, and I would raise the temp in the tank to 85 over a couple days.
It could be something else though. Look up about Epsom Salts (there is a good thread somewhere in the angel/discus section,, kinda old), they are my go to parasite medicine with my syno and cory cats. Pics?

Also, feed him some algae disks, and/or a little bit sliced zuchini. Won't be much for him to eat if the tank is as clean as it should be while he heals up.

Thanks for your replies, and the bump, i was wondering if this is caused from starvation? i do feed it cucumber, algae wafers and spinach but unfortunately the goldfish will consider it their food and start nibbling with no chance to the pleco.

quite difficult they try on cucumber.

also never heard of epsom salt, but to what i know salt is irretating to their skin, although dont know if this one's in-ex cluded
ill look up for that.

Melafix, Aquarium salt, and raise the temp to about 85F. Pleco's do fine with aquarium salt so no need to worry.

Remember it's just a tiny weird mark, some of the chiclid guys could tell you tales of catfish recovering to almost as good as new after having their tail more or less chewed off.
A good trick for feeding would be to wait until night, turn the tank lights out, dim the room and wait a half hour or so and then drop in your pleco food and then go to bed.
Your BN should be fine. Studd's suggestion is also par for the course. If you do end up adding aquarium or any salt be sure to dissolve it before adding it to the tank. Just adding the salt straight in is what causes most of the problems.
Didn't know you had goldfish, they should be ok with higher temps but keep an eye on them. Not sure how warm your tank is now, or how powerful your heater is (or if you even have needed one up until now) but it's best to go slow when raising temps.

The wound (or whatever it really is) has grown a little bigger but is getting less reddish, anyone know what that means?
i have no idea if its wound caused by aquarium objects or an infection.

also havent used any treatments yet as i dont know which and how on plecos
all i did is raised the temp to reading 84

add some salt bump temps and water change:P the solution to almost everything:P

I only use a heater in winter and colder days but my aquarium isnt really needing a heater as the fact that i keep goldfish in there, they both do fine in one temp, also the power filter pump does do alot of heating to the water.

currently i have put a heater but being carefull not to heat too much unless i will seperate the pleco from goldfish, this is all about the pleco's problem really and these couple a weeks i didnt really need a heater unless i notice the temps dropping, they were doing fine.

i will also try get some decent pics of the pleco

@Bazinga: im not sure if aquarium and table salt is fine to add? do u think so?
i have done waterchange to my saltwater aquarium and we're out of aquarium salt anyway.
