Do you need to remove the silicone sealant from between the glass when resealing a tank? If so how?

yes, and a razor blade.

Wow are you serious? Do you have to remove the trim too?

new silicone does not stick to cured silicone...

So if you do not trust the old seal, 'patching' it is a risky idea...

I have never removed the silicone that is in between the panes when doing a reseal unless it was discolored from meds or i was switching colors of sealant.

There is also no reason to remove the trims.

The tank I am resealing is a 55 gallon that was leaking from the bottom of the tank. I have decided since the cross brace on the top center of the tank was broken I am going to replace the trim with a glass top with braces in quarters. But since the tank was leaking on the bottom will I need to remove the bottom trim as well? We have one side done but we are having a hard ass time getting the other side off and we have not gotten to the bottom yet.

Got the seal off and tank broken down. Used acetone (fun stuff) and just waited a few then went at it with a razor blade. Got it all taken down and the GF broke one of the 48 inch sides. Figures now to plan B. Oh and it only took a full day to do. From 6pm to 11pm one night and last night we started at 6pm and turned in around 10pm.
