iv got 4 4" senegals and i dont think they can see anything other then shadows and stuff... anyone know anything about this?

how well do they see? badly is the answer. senegals actually have better vision than most.

No real studies have been done on visual acuity of bichirs.Generaly they tend to rely more on their well developed sense of smell to locate foods. However some species such as senegals do appear to have a field of vision that extends some 10-12inches at least mine seem to considering I have seen them basicly sight hunt guppies from approx. that distance-Anne

My sengal can see the best by far between my Lap, Sengal and Ornate. The ornate almost looks like he has a cataracts over his eyes (all the ones at the store had the same look) but all of the bichirs seem to have much more movement based vision. The lap will literally nudge food before eating it, but will turn and go after a shrimp if he sees one fall to the bottom of the tank.

depends i have knon delhezi to have good eye sight but have seen ornates with very poor eye sight but all have a very adapt sence of smell

yea, i guess i was only wondering because a friend of mine said hers hunted guppies, i just couldent see mine being able to do that.

Yea I agree, my 10" Lap used to do the same thing, my 11" ornate does it now too actually, finds the food, "smells" it and then eats it...........

Welcome to MFK serpentara! :)

My juvie endli's do the same thing, while the del and the senegal seem to 'see' their food better because they go straight for the pieces of shrimp, rather than swimming around first, then nudging their food.

Helps to explain why the senegal and the del are so fat!

The Ornate in my tank definately sight-hunts, as Blondie mentioned & reacts to movement of only a visual nature, when in that radius.

He won't be rivaling the accuity of birds of prey anytime soon, tho....
