ok so how wide should i make the custom tank? i am designing the rack system that will hold it and my other tanks and need to know how wide i want to make it, it will be the center piece of my rack system and will be 6 long, by 2 feet tall, but i dont know how wide/deep to make it? it will hold a california kingsnake, and may eventually get divided to house 2 snakes(6 inch divider) while i attempt to breed my king( me and my gpa have a plan to breed some kings to try and get some new patterns, my king is het for a few sweet things so never know what will come...). so how wide? i have heard that a 6 foot snake will coil up to be a circle that is around 12 inches wide is this true? thnx for all the help guys.

anybody? i want to start building the rack system but i dont know how wide to make it cause i dont know how wide to make the tank...

I believe (and I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong) that for a snake of that size you should be fine with making the tank two feet deep.

According to the above article a general rule of thumb is to provide 3/4 square foot of floor space for each foot of snake. With a six foot snake, that means you'll need 4.5 square feet of floor space. Given the 3' length, and some extremely simple math, we can determine that in order to make 4.5 square feet of floor space, the depth will need to be a minimum of 18". The math can be seen below:

3 x X = 4.5

X = 4.5/3

X = 1.5

ok sweet he'll just be a spoiled little king. i am also building him a custom hideout that is a castle, i think im having too much fun with the king part of his species.

Honestly, as ia default i tend to do 2 feet wide as you can keep almost any standard lizard/snake/anything else comfortably unless it gets huge. So i would do that.

That'd be another way to go about it - build it larger than necessary so you can use it for something else if you want to.

More Important Factor than the Animal size.

Is this a permanent tank or one that may be moved someday?

If It may be moved I suggest an inch smaller than the Doors.

A Deeper cage allows more options on Furnishings and their placement and a wider selection of plants if your going naturalistic

its his permanent tank. i have decided to make it 5 feet long instead of 6 feet so i can put a 40 gallon and a 15 gallon side by side under it or above it(not actually on top of it, but in the next rack compartments) thnx for all the advice guys. ill start posting pix when i build it.
