Ive got a 250 gallon garage pond with a yellow bullhead going in it. How would you filter it. Could I just fill a 5 gallon buck with media, and gravel at the bottom, add a spigot at the bottom and call it a filter?

I would use a 55 gal plastic drum or trash can with a spigot and the media would be Matala type mats.

I would use a 30-40g rubbermaid container with about 5g of bioballs. Use a submersable pump for a return.
Now, how do you get the water out of the pond, into the filter and back? A spigot on the pond wall into the filter, the discharge of the pump(submerged in the filter) to the same pond wall near the top, and just throttle the spigot to match the return flow.
Problem; with the pump off, the pond will continue to drain flooding the sump and your garage.
Get an Eheim 2262 and call it a day. My brain hurts.

Ive got a 550gph pump. For an over head sump could I take a pair of 5 gallon buckets, stack them on top of each other and fill them with media. If I take a trash can would I just fill it with media and pump water to the bottom and let it water come from a spigot at the top? and would I have to fill the can with matala mats.
