what natives have you tried to keep some require different care for instance sunfish can be treated like cichlids except no heater. Also baby fish seem to fare better than adults.

Only fish I have had a problem keeping alive is crappie. I think I need to immediately get the fish to a tank, instead of continuing to fish for another hour or so. I even add and drain the water every 45 mins to an 1 hour with double and triple airstones while I am at the lake. I change and drain water before I head to the house. The crappie lays on it's side before I get it to the house. I have no problems with perch, sunfish and catfish.

ive been keeping them similar to cichlids in a 30 gal @ my pals house he says everything works they just kinda die...

how long do you acclimate them? What are your water parameters? What time of year do you get your fish?

Is the filter cycled before you add fish?

How many and how large of fish are you adding?

You could be having issues with ammonia poisoning, among other possibilities.
