My new tank should be ready in a few days. It's 72x30(w)x24(h), basically just a 220g but sideways. Stand will be finished after the holidays.

The plan was to put an AquaTerra Amazona 3D background in it (hence the extra width), but I decided to try a new idea - I want to make a driftwood wall with loads of Anibias attached to it. I'm going to start with the three pieces I have so far. Need to:

1. Make the "back panel" denser, especially the left side. It's going to take a special piece.

2. Add a few branchy on top to provide overhead cover.

The dimensions are fairly close to the final plan. Just wondering if there are any obvious problems with this idea? I'll keep SAs in it so low pH is good. Ideas and comments will be appreciated too :)

not quite sure what you're describing. Will this wood be in front of a black background, or no background or what ? You will certainly need to make it denser to obscure the back of the tank if that is your intention, even with plenty of plants attached.

THe wood layout so far is really nice BTW !

I think a black background would look great with that, I would put up some black paper before you paint it. In-case you change your mind

I've also seen people sand their wood a little and it makes the colors of the wood POP.

this sounds like an interesting idea to say the least. I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread

my answer is: that's exactly what I would like to do

so, I look forward to pics once you get it all set up ...

Hey Peter, that wood looks awesome. If your not going the 3D route, can I suggest you look into "Java" wood? It is branchy wood found in bird stores in various sizes and is much cheaper than from an LFS. They are used to mount inside bird cages and are very branchy/mangrove "looking".. I am adding 5-8 pieces (mounted upside down) in my 125 gallon. So it looks like there are mangrove roots dangling in the water. I've never seen it done so I wanted to try it out :D

The bolt/nut are stainless steel and can be mounted upsidedown leaving the bottom open for swimming space, the endges are rounded off so no rough edges and is safe (birds chew/consume it). This is the first large piece I added to the tank. I have allot more to go but you get the idea. This tank has no 3D background it's for my dwarfs.

I know your partial to live plants but since my 300 gallon is in the garage I don't want top pamper live plants. I use silk plants to cover the returns (the plants sway in the flow BTW). The fish in the tank do not allow me to have anything real.

Lastly, have you thought of a moss wall? Either star of java moss grown on black mesh?

I dunno if that deck is going to fit in your tank.......I know its a big tank, but thats a big deck!
