I've got a five gallon with java moss and a stick-on shelf. I used one of those tiny stingray filters and pointed it at the glass to baffle the flow. He cannot swim of float, just scoot around. Do you think the ledge is close enough to the surface for him to get air? I hope he'll lay on the moss to make it easier. The seashell is a necessary evil for light buffering against my tap water's inevitable overnight pH crash. The lid has no openings except where the power cords enter at the opposite corner from where his ledge is. I just have to watch for him falling off the ledge and needing help back up. Any other thoughts?
