Hey guys and girls. If you haven’t heard there is a bill trying to get passed to restrict the importation/breeding of most non-native animals. Reptiles, amphibians mammals, FISHES.

I’m doing an argument paper on this bill and how I oppose it.

Here are the points that I want to make
  1. Drastically affect the pet industry. Big companies and Mom/Pop stores. I think the industry is worth 42 billion dollars.
  2. Large number of animals that is non-native to the US cannot survive our cold winters. Only a small percentage is invasive.
  3. Many people breed animals for a living and to help conserve the animal.
  4. All pets, that are not approved will be either exported, or killed. And killing is cheaper.
If you guys can help me do some research it will be helpful. Anything that will help back up the four points will help.

What you can do to help.
  1. Call your local fish stores; let them know about the Bill. Asked them to make a list species of non-native animals that give them the most revenue.
  2. If you are a breeder, explain what your goal is for fish keeping. And your dependence on the sales of tropical fish.
  3. Give your testament on why you oppose the bill.
  4. opinions on how to restrict pets that are invasive
Thank you in advance. You don’t have to do this for me, but do it for all of us to try and save our hobby.

Things that you can do to help. Write a letter to your state officials. write a letter and post it on here. so that we can quickly copy it and give our own testimonial, print it out and mail it out.

Bumping this as well.

Just as an added note, keep your letter as positive as possible. Harassments will not help matters.

thank you lupin and wurm.

write letters everyone, send them to your state officials

That is correct, in my reading, it will require an "approved" list within 36 months. All tropical saltwater and freshwater fishes will be on this "approved" list because the RA requires these findings to be removed.

    • [*](4) the likelihood that environmental conditions suitable for the establishment or spread of the species exist in the United States;

      [*](5) the likelihood of establishment of the species in the United States;

      [*](6) the likelihood of spread of the species in the United States;

      [*](7) the likelihood that the species would harm wildlife resources in the United States;

None of the tropical SW or FW fishes can be found to cause the above, and therefore will remain on the approved listing.

That's my reading for fishes, however the fish buisness may suffer if importers are hurt due to other species being disallowed.
