I recently picked up 6 Honduran Red Points from Jeff Rapps (2 regular and 4 Leucistic). Great looking fish I really enjoy them. I was planing on giving them their own tank but my wife was really not happy about me setting up another tank.

I put them in my 75 with my severum and 2 firemouths. I only kept two male firemouth because I was tired of them breeding all the time. They are so common nobody wants them. I assume HRP can breed with Firemouths since I have seen convict x firemouth hybrid. I am taking my chances that the HRP wont breed with the FM because they have fish of there own type to breed with if they get the urge. I really hope they don't cross.

Does this theory sound logical?

I also have a female Texas in the tank she is does fine with smaller tank mates and isn't aggressive at all (yet). I can move her in with a male I have in another tank if need be. I don't have them together cause I don't want them breeding. They are also very common and I am sure the fry will be hard to get rid of. The only fish I have that I don't mind breeding is the HRP's because I know I can get rid of them. Also a Texas x HRP might look cool but doubt that would happen.

Current stock list is

2 x HRP
4 x Leucistic HRP
1 x red dot severum
1 x texas cichlid
1 x rubber lip pleco
1 x common pleco

Are there any changes I should make?

I don't think that you'll have much issue with hybridization. I have a 55 that has both a breeding pair of meeki and a breeding pair of amatitlania coatepeque along with a few extras of both species. I've never seen any interest in the two species mixing. I'd be more worried about the leucistic HRPs mixing with the regular HRPs. I've talked with a few folks who have studied the cryptoheros/amatitlania genus and they believe that they are different species (and more specifically that the leucistic are probably a hybrid of some sorts).

Personally, I'd move the texas before it becomes a problem.

Its very possible that you see some mixing going on I've had two texas in a tank at one time and both chose to take up separate mates the female chose a dovii and the male a parrot not thinking right at the time I chose the dovii texas pair thinking of rarity I've had the samething happen with convicts a female chose a male texas and the male convict didn't pair up with anything I've recently had two texas pair up but basically forced the pair with putting them in with just immature flowerhorn

This should be in the hybrid section. I would never buy fish from Rapps to create hybrids.

You miss read my post. I am not trying to create hybrids. I was asking if I was safe from creating hybrids. I was asking since the HRP have like type fish with them will it keep them from hybridizing with the FM. if not I will remove the FM.

My OP said "I put them in my 75 with my severum and 2 firemouths. I only kept two male firemouth because I was tired of them breeding all the time. They are so common nobody wants them. Thanks for the input that is good to hear about the meeki. That was my main concern. I wasn't concerned about the regular and leucisitc hrp mixing because I thought it was the same species just one had the recessive leucisitc gene. I will have to do more research on that.

Yes I am keeping a close eye on the texas. I will move if she starts causing issues.

That is really interesting so I guess the Texas cichlids like a little variety lol. I guess I am just going to watch carefully and if I see breeding behavior i will take action. Both meeki and texas have distinct breeding colors so shouldn't be hard to spot.
