Hello everyone, Was greeted today by my female Honduran Red Point out patrolling the tank with her new spawn and bodyguard bf.
Looks to be quite a small spawn only around 60 babies, wether she left some of the babies back in the cave i don't know.
what is normal for this species?

The fry all look very healthy and active I managed to remove about half of the fry into a breeding trap so around 30 of them. when the fry have grown a little larger I will put them in my 20 long and unfortunately have to rehome my Electric catfish thats growing out in there at 2" currently.

My main question is, it's been about 5 or 6 years since I had cichlid babies and so far they have no yolk sac left, so I got 2 shrimp pellets, left them to soak in water so they became soft and waterlogged, and I put those in for the fry to nibble on. I used to do this with my fry years ago, my question is. Is that a good idea? I will be going to the pet store either tomorrow or the day after to get some more food for my lizard so if there is any particular frozen food or such I should buy, what would you recommend?

thanks in advance guys!

ps. the camera couldnt focus on them cause they are too tiny so sadly no pics

The best frozen food for fry are artemia ( Brine shrimp) IMO. You can also try crushed up flakes or crushed up pellets. Thats how I raises my Kribensis fry and about 12 survived ( In a community tank with much larger fish!! ;) )

Hope I could help a bit.

they are allot like con fry..my con fry take crushed flakes as soon as they are free swimming with no problem, I also feed frozen (thawed) baby brine shrimp and micro worms...witch i always have a culture of going.

Congrats on the spawn.

I fed mine hakari first bites and crushed flake food. Baby Byrne shrimp are good too.

My pair only produced about 50-60 fry, but it was their first spawn.
Sadly, my male killed his mate. I now have about 10 left.

wow thanks for the advice guys, I think I will use the crushed fish flakes.
I moved them into an empty 10gallon about an hour ago. about 10 of them are hiding in a corner together but theres quite a few of them spread out and exploring. How long before they start to come to the front for food? I think all in all I probably only have 30 babies. it was a suprisingly small amount but the other group I caught lsat night seemed to have made it out of the breeding trap except for a few.

Either way I am happy with my babies and can't wait to see them grow.
and RLham the parents are already mature heres a pic

nice congrats on the spawn

The trick I used for my HRP fry worked like a charm. They tend to all cower together. So I would take the crushed up pellets or flakes, and I would dip my finger into the tank, then the crushed food sticks to your fingertip. Third quickly dip your finger back into the tank right above them and the powder will sink strait down to them perfectly. It also makes it really easy to portion the food.

Thanks electricblue, thats a really good Idea I will try it. The fish are split between 4 groups. one larger group of about10 that all swarm together. and then the 3 smaller groups of loners that are exploring. there appears to be roughly 20-30 fish but its hard to tell as right now they aren't very active and the speckles of sand on the clear floor makes seeing the fry pretty hard until they get a bit bigger.

Also would like to add that they have a 30gal trickle filter on the 10. so the water quality should be very good for the fry.
