to add to what Ken said, also the HRP has a more elongated body in comparison to the convict. HRP's are typically, if I remember right, found more often in faster moving waters whereas convicts are typically found in more calm waters such as ponds and lakes.
I used to be involved in the same Louisville fish club as Rusty Wessel so I had the great privelege of getting to talk to him on more than one occasion about many different species. It was awesome to get to pick his brain. He is definitely of the notion that they are separate species. He said in fact that if the HRP would eventually be described as a color morph or variant of any species that it would actually be the nanoluteus as HRP's have much more in common with nanoluteus than with the normal convict.
