They like live food, you can try krill, freeze dried or whole frozen, but the live food would be easier to feed because krill and other dead food items take time. Just give them appropriately sized live fish that have been quarantined.
 
The one I had LOVED Crickets. Put a few live ones on the surface and enjoy the frenzy. Just make sure they are in the centre of the tank so they don't bonk their snouts on the edge of the tank. Best part is that they quickly converted to brown Cichlid pellets with the crickets as a supplement
 
I've been told they grow fairly slow and get 8"-10"
Maybe i fed mine a little too often but I got mine at3-4 inches and when he died a year later due to a power failure while I was away he was pushing 9 inches. He grew pretty fast but I am fairly sure they get around 12 inches
