So, I've been keeping a young oscar successfully with a school of silver hatchets for around a month or two now. Not very long, but still, I never expected what happened today to happen today.

Yup, he ate them. All seven of them. I thought they would be ok because he's young and they were all bigger than his mouth (I know, I know). I should have taken the hint when he ripped up all of the plants in the tank but two last week. He had never tried to redecorate before. I guess he's not a baby anymore.

I fed the fish this morning and all of the hatchets were there. I came back not even twenty minutes later, and every single one was gone. He must have eaten them all. I checked all around the tank and the hatchets had not jumped out. They're prone to jumping out during feeding, so I'm always careful to look for them.

So RIP my little silver hatchets.

You should make him watch Finding Nemo.

Fish are for friends, not for food. :)

Yeah, they sure are characters.

I'm not surprised it happened, I did expect it, just not yet. I was hoping they last until I upgraded him to an even bigger tank, but I guess he got impatient. I kind of want to hate him for it, but I can't.

I bet he was looking at them everyday, timing it for maximum shock value, thinking "One day, my pretties." Either that or got tired of them divebombing him. They were pretty mean to him.

Edit: Yeah, whoever I told that I thought hatchets would do alright with an oscar... I was wrong. Very wrong.

I'm going to have about 10-20 Tiger Barbs in my 300 for cycling. I will be interesting to see how long they survive once I introduce a pair of baby Oscars. :)

I'm secretly hoping they make it but not counting on it.

No kidding.

To top things off, when I go back there to look at him, he give me this kind of "it wasn't me" look, and starts wiggling around like I'm going to give him a treat. God, how can he still be hungry?
