Huge storm, power out for 44 hours
Most of the Pacific Northwest got hit with what can only be described as a hurricane on Sunday night, and the power was out for 44 hours from 11:40 PM Sunday until about 7:30 last night. There was snow on Saturday and the temperature was in the high 20's (pretty cold for this area), and then on Sunday a huge warm front passed over.

In the middle of the night on Sunday there were winds of up to 100 mph where I live (Montesano), and much much higher winds closer to the ocean. The worst winds of heard of were sustained winds of 160 mph in Astoria, Oregon. There are huge trees down everywhere; some are more than 70 feet tall. We have a few trees in our yard that would have smashed our house, but luckily they stayed upright during the storm. We did lose alot of shingles, but it's nothing compared with what other people are dealing with.

Most of Montesano has power now, but it is estimated that there are still 30,000+ people in Grays Harbor without electricity. There was also some MAJOR flooding in Chehalis/Centralia. Is estimated that five people are dead and a bunch more are missing. Seattle had the second highest rainfall in 24 hours that they have ever recorded, and the National Guard evacuated a trailer park in Elma this morning.

There are huge traffics jams everywhere because everyone is trying to get gas and supplies. Montesano only has about 3,000 people but there were 200+ cars lined up trying to get gas at the Chevron, which was appearantly the only open gas station in the county yesterday.

The PUD crews are working 48 hour shifts to get the power back on. Less than a block from my house six telephone poles snapped from the wind, we got some pretty dramatic pictures of the damage. There was also a 100 foot tree that fell a couple blocks away.

The winds have really died down, but everyone is worried about the flooding now. The river is supposed to be at it's highest at 4 PM today. We're pretty high so we'll be fine, but it's not going to be pretty for most of Grays Harbor.

I'll add more details later, my sister wants to use the computer.

Sorry to hear about the town but glad everything is ok in your house. Good luck.

They told us to be ready. But I guess the mountains absorbed all of the punch. We had maybe a 25mph gust. We are a category 5 wind zone so a normal day is typically about this windy. Sorry to hear about the power. We are having La Nina again. At the same time we were hit with the "pineapple express" Locals here call it a Chinook. We had 6" of snow last week and a daytime high of 22 at the coldest, then yesterday it was 70...This winter is going to be a MOTHER in the whole USA be ready guys and gals and mark my words....:)

I just got my power back on last night. Not much damage to my home just a few fallen trees and neighbors shingels all over the yard. My house got down to 48 degrees and I lost no fish so I am pretty happy.:headbang2

In Enumclaw we had normal winds (up to 40mph) and a bit of rain. Never lost power. Hope everyone who faced the brunt of the storm is OK.

I watched a show about that. It is from all the emissions from cars during the week and then it lets go when the driving ceases...Intresting little fact...
