OK so I'm going to be building a rather large tank in a few years for my GATFs. I'm not building it yet for two reasons One: the GATFs have plenty of time to grow before it's needed. And Two: I don't plan on living where I am now before the tanks needed.

Well I have been thinking about how to build this thing and I can't decide which will be stronger. I'm starting to think block instead of a 2x4 or 2x6 setup like necros. My problem is size. It's going to be somewhere in the ballpark or 25'x5'x4'. I would rather a very long tank then deep to giv ethe GAFTs room to swim. then a more square shape.

So what would be the better idea to do block kinda like JohnPTCs or to do a wood based like Necro? My biggest concern is top bracing. I'm worried it will bow.

Let me know what you guys think. And remeber this is just in the planning stage till I get moved. and that will hopefully be as soon as the economy gets better and my job steadies out.

i thaught the same question for my 480 blocks or wood or both block on the bottom then finish off the base with 3/4 ply????

I think CMUs are a better option. I have no experience with something that large with either but I think JohnPTC had the right idea.

That being said, necros tank is pretty awesome..

Have you priced either option yet?

Na not yet priced. I'm more pricing filtration right now b/c building material cost vary so much in a short amount of time.

BLOCK WOULD BE CHEAPER

that's what I was thinking and with block if I can confirm it will be cheaper and stronger I can possibly justify going out to 6' wide.

dude we both rockin the mother tanks with block builds this should be fun we must post pics of us doing this lol

I am planning on building a big tank, somewhere around 12x4x4, and have been thinking about the same question. The only positive I could see to wood is that it would be portable, but with a tank the size you're talking about moving isn't an option!

this is also a good question. block could not be moved no matter what. but wood could be moved assuming that you have the space and doorways to get it in and out. Which would be problematic for anyone. but also the only time I would even consider moving it would be if I were to look into outside fiberglass companies to waterproof it for me. but with block I could easily do it myself with an epoxy.

Now I know you can epoxy wood too but I would still worry it didn't get coated good enough and then I would have a rotting issue that would lead to tank failure. and I don't need 3500+ gallons flowing in my house. lol

I still wonder about top bracing. for a block tank. I'll have to search thought JohnPTCs threads and see if he's got good pics of the top of H.O.S.
