Hi, I'm new to MFK, but have been keeping fish for as long as I remember.
As much as I love these awesome fish, finding tankmates for the little buggers is nearly impossible. Their appetites for other fish is too great for a lot of the species found in your LFS. So, I have a 45 gallon tank with two full-grown hujeta 'gar', two young angelfish, and two swordtails. The tank, according to some resources online, is too small for my hujetas. However, I already have them and they have ample room to swim. I'm planning on making a South American Biotope, and I'm having trouble with finding tank mates for my 'gar'. My first question: are 4 angelfish in a 45 gallon tank overstocked? If not, are there any other SA fish I can include that wont be gobbled up? (Keep in mind that one of them has tried to eat a half-dollar-sized angelfish.) I have ~50 gambusia affinis in there for a constant food supply so that my hujetas can eat a small fish when they're hungry, instead of eating a (prized) koi swordtail when it's starving.
Thankyou!

I think your on the edge of OK. I have had a Huerta since he was a minnow now going on 3 years. I'd say he is about 6 inches long, he is in a 120 now, but spent his first 2 years in a 36gal.

Despite the nickname "Rocket Gar", I find them relatively slow moving and docile. They will of course eat anything they can fit in their mouths, but they aren't aggressive nippers flying around the tank, so they don't need a ton of room.

Huerta's are one of my favorite fish, and I found them hardy and easy to care for. Coincidentally I had a Huerta eat a swordtail once.... so keeping smaller fish in the tank is a necessity.

(Now if I could just say the same thing about a freshwater redtail barracuda I am trying to raise, for the 3rd time!)

As for angels, I don't know that much. But I would think they could co-habitate well.
