Hi, I'm new to MFK, but have been keeping fish for as long as I remember.
As much as I love these awesome fish, finding tankmates for the little buggers is nearly impossible. Their appetites for other fish is too great for a lot of the species found in your LFS. So, I have a 45 gallon tank with two full-grown hujeta 'gar', two young angelfish, and two swordtails. The tank, according to some resources online, is too small for my hujetas. However, I already have them and they have ample room to swim. I'm planning on making a South American Biotope, and I'm having trouble with finding tank mates for my 'gar'. My first question: are 4 angelfish in a 45 gallon tank overstocked? If not, are there any other SA fish I can include that wont be gobbled up? (Keep in mind that one of them has tried to eat a half-dollar-sized angelfish.) I have ~50 gambusia affinis in there for a constant food supply so that my hujetas can eat a small fish when they're hungry, instead of eating a (prized) koi swordtail when it's starving.
Thankyou!

Moved to Other Characins.

Hujetas are characins, though from your putting gar in quotations I suspect you already knew that. A common alternative name for them that works well to distinguish them from Lepisosteidae is 'silver pike characin'. The fish who look similar to them are all called pike characins.

As for your original question of what to feed them, I just gave mine pellets. For the tank size, I would suggest you upgrade to at least a 75. A full grown silver pike is about 9" long and would be extremely cramped in a 40b. Those two fish alone would be borderline overstocked in a 40b, nevermind the trouble they'd have moving around.

Thank you for moving it, I was kind of freaking out about it being in the wrong forum. Yes I knew they were characins, I have weaned my hujetas onto pellets, but got a huge deal on the 50 (healthy) feeder fish, and couldn't resist. I suspect that I will soon inherit a 220 gallon, and they would go in there if I get it. If not, I am planning on purchasing a 125 in December or January... But if neither of these work out, will they be ok in the tank? L: 36" W: 12"
