I'm looking into either a hujeta gar or a pink tail chalceus for the upper level of my planted 75. I know the chalceus can be kept solo, but I've most of the hujeta threads I've seen have talked about keeping several of them. Would a single one be okay in my 75?

The Hujeta Gar probably would feel safer in a group but a single one would be ok.

Group always better. But if no aggressive tankmates then it should be fine.

Is this true for both the gar and the chalceus? And would a group of either be okay in my 75? It's pretty well stocked but its also heavily filtered and densely planted in areas. I'm mostly worried because of how active these fish are.

It’s true for both fish. The 75 would better for the hujeta gar more so than the chalceus.
