We have two hujeta gars that we got not too long ago and they were in the same tank at the fish store when we got them and are in the same tank now and we haven't had any problems since they are peaceful fish but today when my boyfriend walked in the room he said one had the other in its mouth- not in an attacking/aggressive way but like holding the other one- is this normal or what does this mean? was it aggressive? they are supposed to be schooling and peaceful fish so iuno

They are still small probably about 2 inches or so we have panda corys with them and they've never bothered with them at all and they don't seem aggressive at all they haven't done anything else since this one time that one had the other in their beak/mouth, really weird. At the store they said they were schooling fish so i was wondering why it would grab the other like that.

At that size, probably mistook the other for a food item, instead of actual aggression.

That's the answer ;)

Plus, they are not real shoaling fish when they become older in my experience.

How big are they? Once these become settled in, they seem to get more brave with their foods. Mine will chase everybody around the tank and try to eat fish close to his own size.

I had a hujita attempt to eat a ropefish 3 inches longer then itself, needless to say the rope died. The only thing they won't really go for are laterally compressed fish much taller then the gar like bigger gouramis

thats crazy that they go to eat almost anything they get their beaks on, ours haven't done anything really since that one incident, hopefully they will be okay to be together down the road

ps thanks for all the info!
