Have you guys tried floating plants with your rays...? not that i need the extra filtration but every little bit helps, picked up some water hyasin a few days ago. Its seams to be doing ok, producing alot of babies anyway. what experience have you guys had with top water plants and rays. P.S this is really my second attempt at live plants i could be going about this all wrong

Tried it, but not enough light and the plants always ended up in the overflows.

Here is a Pothos plant I have. It's really for added filtration though. And it is really not floating. More in this basket with a ziptie to the frame of the canopy. uploadfromtaptalk1354722640440.jpguploadfromtaptalk1354722587584.jpg

I have water sprite rubberbanded to my out take and a large piece of drift wood near the top of the tank, it was originally there for looks and tied off like that it stayed out of my filters. Problem is I almost crashed my tank , it started growing out of control and blocking light so I pruned out a huge portion of it, not thinking about the volume of bacteria it had in it.....

i got part of the tank tapperd off so the plant can only grow over about 1/2 the tank. The hyasin is growing well i dont pay hrydo so im not worried about lighting, oooooo you mean the bacteria were breaking down ray waste, and thats what almost crashed your tank ?

Yes sir, good bacteria was removed when i pruned the plants (i removed about 2 pounds) and it put a stress on my filtration and spiked my ammonia. I caught it in time but could have been much worse.
