When will a male synspillum develop a sizable hump. Mine is 3 year old and 11" long, but only has a slope on the forehead, but not much a hump as I saw in other pics and youtube. I think it is a male by his head profile and examination of his vent. Could it be the environment that delayed his hump formation as I raised him as a lone male with no other Vieja competition until recently. I recently got him another 3" sysnpillum and a couple V. fenestratus as tankmates and wonder if it will induce him to develop the hump or not.

I'd say mostly genetics for sure but I noticed a sizable difference in the nuchal humps of my red texas and flowerhorns when there were other males and/or females in the tank. It should maxamize his potential!
