correct term is nuchal humps (kok refers to FH's) and both males and females get them, they are more prodominant on male fish though.

most midas get them, and they are common in species from the amphilophus genus.

i thought my be the hump was from selective breeding because ive seen some with huge humps and others that had only a bump and they were both males

i do not know of people who have selective bred midas for nuchal humps, but it's done in the FH trade. So i'm sure someone out there has done it to see how large a hump may get on a midas or another amphilophus, but if it's done, it isn't common.

Agreed. I did buy a fish whose father had a HUGE hump; just for that reason.

I think some of the fish we encounter in the hobby that closely bred and it is my belief that is why we lose some of the fishes natural features (color and nuchal hump size).

Just my .02

The hump is to attract the females. I believe that when the male is trying to cort a female the nuchal gets even bigger. LOL

i think it also has to do with the condition of the fish, nutrition and such just not genetics. and i also believe they will not develope as large humps if they are not the dominent fish in the tank.

males develope a much larger hump but females may get them aswell.
GETTING A BIG FAT BARRED MIDAS? lol.
