My set up www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?262743-First-Setup-plan/page1 is a Reverse Under gravel, and I Loved it for years.

I decided I need to freshen the build, so i ordered a new "supreme hy drive 2600" pump. I hada mag drive 1800 I believe. I felt that the flow was a little weak, but everything worked great.

So i redid the background, eliminated some of the plumbing I never use, and built a plywood tank for my sump coated in truck bedliner.

Two issues I am now having;

the flow started to slow down after about 2 months. I use gate valves to adjust the tank so everything is flowing perfect. About once a week I have to close each of the two mains a tad. This tells me that the flow going up from the sump to the tank is getting less. So i thought it was just settling in. Last night I had a 4 hour power outage. When the power restored, the tank nearly over flowed ! I had to go down and open the mains up 1/4 turn each.

Any issues with these pumps?

Second issue with new setup, is heat! If you browse my other thread, you will see that I rarely do ANY maintenance to my tank. I swap filters, and I get water change if power goes out. NOTHING like most people here. My water is clear and fish have been healthy. My sump is now bigger and should hold more water. Temps are 80 today, with water change at 1am, and sump is in crawl space and it is near freezing under there.

So do these hy drives develope a lot of heat?

This is not going to work. I might have to rebuild the mag drive or get a new one.

Any thought appreciated.

I was just sitting looking and thinking

Is it possable that i have too much restriction on the pump?

That might cause it to generate heat, but could it cause it to slow down?

Sump temp has to be lower then tank temps.

I did not redo the math to see how much the pipes would flow. I re installed the bypass in the sump and try that i guess.

When is the last time you cleaned the impella. That should be cleaned once in a while. However, I did read a few reviews on drs foster and smiths website. All 5 claimed a good amount of heat was added and none lasted a year before they basically rusted out. I'm guessing they were in saltwater service, but still all failed. I would go back to a Mag pump. Those things last forever.

Mags put out too much heat for me but they are dependable. I would look at DC powered pumps. Electrical savings alone pays for the pump in a year and you control flow electrically. I own two speedwave pumps. The oldest is only about 8 mo old.

I will look into those ideas. I have about an 8 ' head so I need a strong pump. I liked the mag pump, I just thought since I had everything apart I would like more flow. I need to look at the old one and see if it was a 1200 or 1800.

I have 900 somewhere, maybe i could run two if that would increase or not.
