Btw, i've always had my best luck when i separate the 2 i want to breed into their own tank.
either into something like a 40 gal breeder or a 75gal with a "his and hers" divider door.
(Although i' have had a few successful unintentional pairings that were flukes, i.e. I never intended for the Zaliosus x Blood Parrot cross. But it happened.)
You want to separate them for a few reasons,
first the breeding pair will become super aggro.
They will be super territorial and either stress the other tankmates or flat out kill them.
Also, the eggs/fry are less likely to survive if there are random other fish in the tanks.
They will devour them as a treat.
Put in a plate, clay pot, slab of slate,... something that they can lay eggs on.
I like to use something like this because it has a few bonus perk options.
one of the main reasons being that i can remove the eggs and place them in an incubator setup with airstones to fan them if the parents aren't giving me confidence in their attitude or parental skills.
Sponge filters are the way to go with eggs and fry. They wont suck your fry up in the filtration. They are also super cheap and easy to use. Just make sure to have your sponge media primed with beneficial bacteria and make sure your tank is fully cycled. I always like to have a couple sponge filters running in established tanks so i can just take em out and jump start a new setup if i need to.
They are so inexpensive and easy that it only makes sense to do it this way.
I like to leave one or both parents(depending on the temperament of the individual fish) in with the eggs and fry for at least a few weeks. The parents will fan the eggs, giving the eggs oxygen/circulation. They will also remove unfertilized eggs and reduce the amount of deadly egg fungus outbreak.
I also like to add a few drops of methylene blue to also help prevent the white egg fungus outbreaks.
If your male is bigger than your female, it's always smart to put a divider in with a hole that only she can fit through to escape him if he is getting too mean.
At minimum give her a cave or hidey hole of some kind.
That's all the tips i can think of off the top of my head at the moment. I hope it helps.
