is there a reference chart that hobbyist can use to determine where 2 types of cichlids can breed or even produce fertile offspring?

this question of which species are compatible comes up often.

I'm guessing at one point or another, any offspring of any hybrid will eventually be able to reproduce normally...I had a lfs here in the city with a blood parrot and Red Devil/Midas protecting a batch of wigglers...Now, I do not know as a fact if that parrot actually bred or simply became a foster parent, but there were definatley wigglers in the pit....From the great words of Dr. Chaos from Jurassic Park----->"Life will find a way..."

if you want all the reference chart of all the hybrids of Flowerhorn, well that is hard.

yeah, i'm sure it is. but i bet there has been a decent amount of research on this topic by professional breeders.

that's not exactly what i was talking about. i noticed a typo in my initial question, let me clarify. Does anyone know of some sort of reference, such as a chart(I would assume that would be the easiest way to set it up), that tells the potential for offspring from two different species of cichlid? and the probability that the offspring are fertile?

for example: i had a convict x texas. but i was never able to breed them. now was it because the male was sterile or were both fish sterile or was it because I had bad luck?

about the convict and texas part.. i could say all.. heheh. but more likely they shouldnt be sterile..for they are more purebred than Fh.... i would say its best just to either look around on the site for answers or post each questions one by one..:D

I do not believe you will find a chart or referance to hybrid breds anywhere. Most hobbist have looked down on hybrids for a long time. Just in the last 5 years are so have hybrids been getting much thought. Most hybrids before this that happened in home tanks ended up either going to the lfs call by one of the parent species or used as feeders. Hybrids have health problems a lot and usually a lower number of fry are produced( flowerhorns are the exception they have tons of fry) Hybrids also have a high rate of infertility. Flowerhorns have been breed with other flowerhorns long enough to have stablized so most of them are now fertile. You will still find that with some of the other breeds that have come from flowerhorns like kamfa( not as bad now as couple years back) you have a higher degree of infertility. I have not heard much about the fertility of Fortune Fish yet but would like to know the fertility of them
