Is there a rule of thumb for which cichlids are possible to be cross bred? Such as so long as they are from the same phylum etc. or is it just a crap shoot?

I think the key is probably the degree of genetic diversity, so you're certainly better off trying fish from the same region; as noted above, the CA cichlids seem to be particulalry x-able, and I have heard similar things about certain African species
