So I was at Petsmart getting crickets today and in the very overstocked red devil tank I saw a few of these. I was wondering if anyone knew what it may be a cross of? I asked the lady working there and I got an expected I'm not sure. I have a few guesses but wanted some input.

I just picked up a guy/gal who looks a lot like that.
My guy/gal has the same face/mouth shape with lil more gold with red edging on the belly & fins, same flowerline with a black spot near the tail.
My guess is a Barred RD/Midas.
He looks like my RD did @ this age, minus the bars & flowerline.

It looked like a FH @ 1st glance, but it's lacks the pearls that many juvi FH's show @ this size.

I'll have to snap pick once he settles in.

How big is your guy?

I didn't buy one but this one was about 3", barred Midas/devil would by really cool I didn't think of that.. But please post pics of yours I'm interested to see what they look like a little older

Yep barred Midasdevil. They are quite common in the wild, about opposite of the hobby. (at least according to my books )

Just because it doesn't show pearls of a fh at a young age doesn't rule out that its a fh.

@OP: You might get more answers if this thread were moved to the Hybrid section.

The guy I picked up is about 1.5"-1.75" so he's still really young.
He/she's also still really skittish so pix are challenging right now.
He/she was the the alpha in that tank so I hope "it" keeps it's aggresive attitude. :D

@ Pearls:
Notice I said "most".

My guess of it being a barred is just a guess judging from the many pix found in the RD/Midas thread.
2nd guess is it's a fader much like my 1st RD who I told was a "FH" in his early days from people who have a lot of experience with both FH's & RD's/Midas.
Although I want the answer to be my 1st guess, I'm leaning towards my 2nd guess. :)
I'll just have to grow it out & see. :D

As of now it really has to be considered a "FH" because most RD/Midas are not very pure or are a mix of the 2, so yes the possibility of it being a hybrid are very high.

The term "Flowerhorn" is being thrown around so much these days & is such a broad term.
Flowerhorn has almost taken over the use of the word hybrid.
IMO Flowerhorns are those fish with huge koks, pearls, double chins, etc.
The real FH are the ones who descend from the strains that were once considered "must haves" not the one's you see popping out of many peoples tanks that cost $2.00.
Same goes for SRT's, you can't find a nice example without buying from a reputable dealer/breeder.
Sort of the same when you look for a nice cichlid.

I like FH's quite a bit so I wouldn't mind if my new fish turns out to be a FH.
I'm not against Hybrids, I have a tank full of them. LOL
