I have seen a great many "pure bred" short body fish, arrowana, cichla, rams, discus, mollies, green terrors and the list goes on. I think we can all agree that none of the above named sb's were created by crossing them to a blood parrot. The list of hybrid sb's I've seen/created are far too numerous to list here, and almost invariably result from parrot genes in the blood line. I've worked with more than a few hybrid sb's, and seen the results of the work others have done with their hybrid sb's. In hybrids with parrot gene's, the sb trait can be considered a dominant trait, pair a hybrid sb fish to a pure fish and you'll very likely get 50% sb's of varying length. This can change according to how much "pure" blood you introduce to that line, for instance if you keep back crossing to a pure species the sb trait may begin to act like an incomplete dominant. You may only get 10% sb fry from such a bloodline when back crossed to a pure species. Pairing those few hybrid sb's will produce more sb's & strengthen the gene in that line. However with pure bred sb's the gene is handed down as a recessive, breed a pure bred sb to a pure bred non sb bloodline, and all the fry will be normal, breed those normals to one another and sb's start appearing again. I've worked with two such lines, sb pink cons, and balloon mollies, in both species the gene was handed down as a recessive. Judging by what I have seen/read, it is my belief that this holds true for all pure bred sb species (arro's, cichla, etc.)
Many times the difference between hybrid sb's and NON hybrid sb's cannot be spotted with the naked eye, and just as many times, they can. Squiggley parrot pupil in an sb pink con's eye, colors that shouldn't/couldn't be there unless the fish in question is indeed a hybrid etc. Whats killing me is the arguments over this trait in regard to sb pink cons. One faction denying the existence of non hybrid sb's with proof (glaring proof might I add) staring them right in the face. Another faction acknowledging the existence of both types of sb, but denying that anything other than their version of the truth is likely. To both sides I say, you're wrong, I've seen the proof. I personally have seen a great many types of fish sold as jb/bg's, many are clearly parrot X con hybrids, in just as many the lines weren't so clear. I've bred a jb to a known pure line, and the all fry were normal, sb's did not apear until I bred the half sb fry to each other. Just as I have proved the opposite with my hybrid sb texas. Hybrid sb can appear virtually pure bred, there is no way to know unless you do a dna test, or breeding test to see if the gene is dominant or reccessive. IMO Not ALL jb's/bg's are hybrids, not ALL jb's/bg's are pure. When the people PRODUCING these various types don't bother to differentiate as to what is, or is not, a jb/bg why should we? It's not as if jb's/bg's are graded, there is no king kong, or mammon jellybean. And why oh why, do I see so MANY locked threads on this topic? If you want to know if your fish is a hybrid sb or not, then cross it to a known pure bred NON sb, if half turn out sb it's a hybrid, if none are it's a pure bred, period. And please God, if you do choose to post in this thread, do so with an open mind, I really don't wanna see this thread get locked too!
