Hi,

As a fisherman I often go trout fishing. One of the things I have noticed in one of the trout ponds is that the trout have had spawn but they are clearly not little trouts. As a study several from close by I notice that they have clear ide ( orfe ) signs. So that got me wondering is it possible that the 2 species ( rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss & ide Leuciscus idus ) can mix?

thanks.

i would assume its possible in labs but there is probbally some sort of biological issue that keeps it from happeneing, wether that is spawning times, behavior, or something else, i too am an avid trout fisherman but have never seen any hybrids except for one which came from a trout farm and that was a brook brown trout hybrid. have seen a half palimino half brown trout trout though, the tail half of its body was golden and the front was typical brown trout, bout 19in atleast.

Catch a few in a net and get us some clear photo's to make an I.D. for you.

It's possible for hybrids in the wild, but it's unlikely.

I can possibly foresee that the pond has a mix of trout species... Say Rainbow + Brown and they both spawn in the same area... the eggs/sperm can mix over if they're close enough in the river/sand bed.

I would suggest taking photo's and if this hybridization is the case, it's very likely a scientific research study might be needed to determine if there is a serious issue with that area. (Such as the hybrids not being able to reproduce... could lead to a significant shortage of fish in the future).
