Hybrids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi Colin,

U are right, there are only the gachua x orientalis known, and they are fertile.
Most of them were bought by IGL-members to get the fish from the market.
so not only Palle has them at home. I Think holger has got some too.
They were accidently bred by a german with not much channa knowledge.

Another guy claimed to have bred gachua x obscura, but He never showed pics.
He also had a breding of two different gachua variants.

Cheers Brucki

Tropheus, here it is... I read it on snakeheads.org. I guess it was just speculation or a thesis of hybridization between the two (C. lucia and C. pleurphthalma).

Another questionable Species description was Ophicephalus "spiritalis" in 1904 by Fowler. However he recognized the similarities to Channa lucia and Channa pleurophthalma
It took 18 years until a thesis of hybridization was developed by Weber & Beaufort 1922 between Channa lucia and Channa pleurophthalma . After all the species of Fowler originated in pedang (Sumatra) which is home to both Channa lucia and Channa pleurophthalma . This thesis deserves some skepticism. In the end Ophicephalus spiritalis was declared a synonym for Channa pleurophthalma .
