I have seen/herd a great deal of negativity tward hybrid's. Esp when somone talks about their HRP/Con or Texas/FH spawning ect ect. I have also herd/seen a lot of it surrounding hybrids in general. I was curious as to the reason behind this? IDK about all hybrids but I have seen a number of them that are absalutly beautiful and healthy fish. Red Tex, FH's ect. In fact I was wanting to eventually get a nice Red tex when I get the tank space for it, is there a reason I shouldnt? such as helth issues, short life span, ect ect.

I think the concern is with careless breeders who distribute those fish without explaining that they're a mixed breed. If it's not obvious that it's a hybrid you could end up with an alleged Jack Dempsey and breed it, not knowing your fish isn't pure. Just think of what it's like with dogs and cats. If people are going to breed dogs they want pure breeds. They don't want to end up with a bunch of mutts.

yes its really more about the fact of mixing species then health issues, as long as their not majorly inbred most hybrids should be fine in regarding health, it is just alot of people believe in keeping lines pure especially when you have sketchy lfs out there making mixes and not labeling them as such as dent said it wouldnt be such a big deal if everyone was responsible and we could keep line of nice looking hybrids and still keep lines of the pure fish but when irresponsible breeders come in then the lines can become mixed and you will end up with fish that are nothing like those in the wild (not only color but also body changes) its also nice to know what to expect, like with dogs each type of fish has different personalities and sizes so if lines are pure you know what to expect when you buy a baby fish, if you buy a chihuahua then thats what you prepare for so if you end up with a great dane mix then your in trouble (aka think your getting a convict and end up with some kind of umbee cross lol would need two VERY different tank sizes)
