Lately i have been seeing a lot of hybrids popping up. is the bass scene going down the same route as rays? are people looking for hybrids now more than the true sp's? ive seen kelrinos and monorinos. what next? i must say im not a fan of these hybrids. here in the uk its near on impossible to get true occels. i have bought 3 batches from 3 different lfs (2 use the same supplier though) and every batch has turned out to be mono/occel cross. i havent seen true monos for sale for a while either.

whats your views on hybrid bass?

I don't think anyone finds mono/ocell hybrids more desirable than pure monos or ocell,
it's just easier for farms to just breed the most common species together as it means more bass
can pair off, regardless of species. An I doubt most farms can tell the difference between monos
and ocells anyway.

one lfs buy farm raised fish to put in thier stores for the fact mono's ocells are the easiest to breed and they mature at a year or younger of age..while other cichla are harder to breed and can take 2-3 years to mature..now if other cichla as say orinos were to mature at one year old and easy to breed all lfs would have them due to the fact easy to get and cheap..catch my drift? as for as kelrinos and morinos etc hyrbids are coming into the hobby due to cross breeding..imo if certain cichla hybrid that can make one nice cichla..just like if a xingu were to breed with a orino..but yeah..

I haven't see a true Kelrion. People tend to buy because of the name given to a certain look of a fish, but most sellers don't even know the history of where and what they came from. The only true hybrid (not including the most commen one mono X ocell) that I have seen is a Xingu x kelberi (if I remember correctly). He even had a the egg lay, fertilizing and wigglers videos of them.

As for the monos and ocell's breeding farms, they are cheap, easy to breed and easy to sell. I'm not against hybrids by no means. I just don't like the fact that if the seller/s sell them under the wrong name. I can understand if they are just labled "peacock bass", then that would be the buyers gamble.

Its the future dude, everything becomes a mixed breed, eventually............

Don't allow your hybrids to mix into retail! They've been pure for eons for a reason. Leave it to man to screw it all up.

98% is hype if i get a fish with a spot on his forehead and call it a unicorn spotted cichla some one else will think its a new breed here comes the galaxy cichla again its an orino plain and simple but someone that couldnt judge cichla said well sir its got a dot here and a headshape here and a fin here and wow look at the spangles at the end of the day its still a pbass and still the coolest cichlid on the planet i think we over stress by far the collection info versus the pure awesomeness of having a large predator in our tanks

some good points raised peeps. i guess ill just have to keep taking a chance on the occels unless someone brings in some wildies...

i just feel like we have enough bass sp's to be happy with - its hard enough getting certain species let alone hybrids. and there is always the worry that hybrids get sold on as true sp's. there is that whole argument going on in the ray lounge right now.

but then you have the other side of he coin - what do you do if you kel pairs off with your azul lol? it would be hard to destroy the eggs/fry...

Interesting and I had been wondering what this galaxy cichla was.....I'm not a big fan of hybrids, period, but the recent thread with the kelrino has piqued my interest in them and it probably wouldn't take too much tempting for me to purchase one if any were around and if the price was right.

That's a good hypothetical question but it seems that it is hard enough to get azuls to breed with each other let alone pairing with a hole nother species. In the past few years, all of the small young zuls that have been sold here in this country were probably either wild caught or bred in Asia.
