how would i get it to grow in a tank?

any one?

I dont know how you'd go about puposely raising them but quite a few people end up with them as a pest over here...so I assume there are not too demanding of water quality...

I have a book that mentions three species. The green hydra (hydra viridissima) which is green due to symbiosis with unicellular algae in its gut...the algae gets fed by the hydra and in turn produces oxygen for the hydra, thus it can live in water with low levels of oxygen. 5-15mm. I'm guessing this is solitaryish.

Hydra Oligactis 20-30mm Very common on plants and stones (in UK) in lakes and slowmoving waters. I guess this is a colony former.

Hydra Vulgaris 10mm 6-8 tentacles that can be stretched up to 3 times its length. Common on plants and stones in shady places in lakes. I'm guessing this is a colony former.

So if you have green hydra, you'll need some lighting, the others prob not as much. Try aged water left in the sun a bit to grow all the little bugs they'll need to eat, or frshly collected water...

Lets us know how you get on!

Buy plants from your local Petco. That's how I got mine, I think. You don't really want them, though, because they sting fish (they can kill fry), they're creepy, and every time you clean the tank, you're only helping them, as they like pretty clean water.

If you want them, though, the ones I have eat whatever I feed my fish as long as the pieces are small enough. My temperature is about 82 degrees F, my water params are ph 6.8, No2 less than 0.05, ammonia 0. So, hopefully that helps.

thanks guys
