Hello, I am new here.
I keep big fishes like arowanas, arapaima, sturgeons ( outside ) and I am looking for very strange fishes.
Does someone ever kept Hydrolicus ?
The pictures I saw were amazing...
I saw some small ones on the Hong Kong market, but impossible to cross the borders with that and to bring it home in Europe.
That fish in an aquarium , it's like keeping a tiger in your living room, isn'it ?
Does someone know about the conditions of keeping ?

thats payara or vampire tetra to you laymens and yes a few people on this site keep them

i have seen small ones for sale in the UK so would expect europe to be able to get them.
you could also try adrien a igarape, he is based in france and mainly deals in piranha but i would expect can get other fish.

I looked into getting some, but from what i've read/heard they rarely get above 12" in the aquarium and are hard to care for.

welcome to MFK...lets see some pix of your current monsters!

I've had my payara for about 5 weeks. It's 3" And eating 1-2 feeders/day :) Great predetor to watch in action.

Thank's, guys, for these answers.
Is there something to know about water quality for these hydrolicus ?
Is it possible to keep more than one ?
I forgot : I saw also one ( 25 cm )last september in the Berlin Aquarium ( at the Zoo ), with many other species in a big tank. All had more or less the same size, of course.
But fishes don't always spend a long life there ...

I'll sned you some pictures of my fishes one of these days.

i have a channa striata in my tank. it always seem to punk the oscars to the left corner of the tank... and the clown knife goes under the lava rock and hides.....

well aniwaise.. its really hard to get a channa. i got mine through my friend who didn't want it anymore. snakeheads are nice but they eat way too much.
