I have a question regarding common names of the four species of Payara. I want to know if these names are correct. Thanks!:grinno:

H. scomberoides: Vampire Characin
H. armatus: Sabertooth Characin
H. tatauia: Red Tail Payara
H. wallacei: ??? (Anybody know it's common name?)

The mostly corny common names are pretty much interchangeable as any one of the top three fish could be labeled as such...not so much with the red tailed tat though, lol.I don't recall a common name for Wallaeci nor have I seen one in captivity.

Glad to be able to help ya.Check out the sticky threads at the top of the page for more information.

actually, all of the common names suggested are inaccurate and I know of almost noone on this forum that calls them by those name. Usually goes by scientific name such as armatus with red tail or yellow tailed payara being an exception

The most common names I've seen at the shops are sabertooth barracuda, sabertooth characin, vampire barracuda, and vampire tetra.

Thats probably because most shops that bother to bring these fish in can't seem to be bothered with identifying what it is that they actually have so they stick with those silly trade names.
