MFK- I ordered a half dozen tats that are coming in friday. They are supposed to be about 5 inches and from the pics i received they look to be tats (we will id each when they get here). I have had a single tat before and also had armatus.. But my goal here is to keep the group as a school. I know this is not possible with Armies but has anyone kept a group of tats together before? I am interested to see how they interact and if a group gives them a better chance long term.

Any thoughts or experience is much appreciated .

Thanks

I have kept a trio and it is a much better experience they do have minor scuffles fairly often however they will keep to themselves 95% of the time. SandNukka15 SandNukka15 has them now

I would get dithers. Lots of them. But match the growth rate..... Masheers maybe? Barbs are going to grow fast, if you have or can get your hands on some silver dollars? Tarpon might work well! Need enough fish in there that none of the Tats think they can take over the tank. I'd keep a huge group of something larger to keep your Tat group tight knit...

I kept a group of Tats before I got into rays. Kept a couple Rhaphiodon Vulpinus with them (HIGHLY recommend the combo) My group of Tats slowly grew apart over time..... Above is what I'd do different, I don't think I packed my tank tight enough. I also introduced an Armatus that screwed things up. Cynopotomus were also great tank mates (pretty tricky to find). The Brycon Ray (Amazing Fish) has right now would be super dithers for them.......

Thanks DB- this is along the lines of what I am thinking... after i quarantine them and hopefully break them from live... have lots of silver dollar types on hand was also thinking of some medium size barbs (t barbs rohani etc) - was planning on the tats and a couple groups of dithers with a big center fish to be the boss... not sure on what on that yet.. the vulp are interesting add - I have never kept them I wish i knew this earlier as i got fish from D Discus Origins this week and he had them available...

Silver dollars work great.....barbs would too....the tats i have (around 9-10 inches) dont bother any of the 6....3.5-4.5 inch tiger silver dollars or the 6....5-6 inch thinbars....one of the tinbars got fanged but that was during feeding and he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time....hes doing well tho....

Growth rate is slow....i believe steve got these tats at around 5 inches 1.5 years ago and have grown only 4-5 inches

What size tank do you plan on keeping these guys for life?

210 for a long while at that growth rate

That would be a nice tank for them....like steve said they really do keep to themseleves.....usually just playing tag between the 3 of them.... during feeding time if a tat and sd go at the same pellet majority of the time the tats will back down last sec. They arent really aggressive but then again mine are 9-10 inches idk how they react when they are larger.

Are you planning on any actual tank mates besides dithers?
