Hi I was thinking of planting my tank but in a fashion where the plants grow out of water and only the roots are submerged similar to a hydroponic setup. Anyone out there try this or heard of this? Suggestions on setup and plant species would be welcome.

Interesting concept..

The second picture looks really nice, mine will look nothing like that but the concept is right. I wonder how those plants are stabilized, I was thinking egg crate over the top so they don't fall in. I have had a planted filter before and I had the tank positioned by the window with occasional direct sunlight, but that is not an option now.

I have a hydroponic wall that drains into my tank. It doesn't sound exactly like what you are looking to do. The ripariums are closer to what you are describing.

woah! why have i not seen this before on MFK? That's a really cool set up. I would love to try that, but rather than a wall, more of like a platform that pumps water to keep a thin layer of running water over it and the plants act almost as a separate filtration unit. i'm not sure. I'll try to sketchup something
