Hydroton or expanded clay

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Many people who have hydroponic systems with tilapia only use clay base pellets but it might be risky with hydroton. I remenber reading an article that states there's impurities in it that may be harmful as its mixed with rubble or foreign material.

hi i am using this stuff in my sump it works out very well but no matter how many months of soaking in the sump they stiff float around.
no side effects but rinse very well its dusty

I use expanded clay and red lava rock in the plant bed section of my aquaponic setup (constant flood), never had a problem with my levels and its the only biological media I use in the setup.

Hydroton is a high quality expanded clay pellet mined out of Germany. I've used in fluidized bed filters, seems to break down overtime, creating dust. There is better media out there but it can be used.

If i were to use any hydro substrate in filters, i would choose growstone's hydro stones. Its purified recycled glass thats been puffed. It looks like seachem pond matrix. Not great in fluidised bed, but excellent in wet-dry, canister, sump, or any stationary media setup
