Actually you got me, they are bryozoans, that's what I get for posting when i am tired and not paying attention to my own posts. They are indeed bryozoans, they for large colonies in Greenfield Lake near where I live. They mostly occur in the hot summer months when lake temps rise into the 80's. They only grow really large in areas where snail, eating fish keep the snail populations low or the nutrient levels are high enough that the bryozoans can out grow the eating of the snails. They look like jelly balls but they are fairly tough and can be picked up with out danger of breaking them up. I've kept them for periods of several months in aquariums but eventually they waste away with out the microbes they feed on. I've seen masses larger than basket balls at one time or another.
