I would never ever in a million years do this to a fish, but purely from curiosity, how long could a salt water fish live if you dropped him in a freshwater tank? How long would a freshwater fish live if you did the same by putting him in a saltwater tank? Hopefully some of you are knowledgable enough to throw out some guesses, Its just something Ive always wondered about?

Well...not very long. Few minutes at most. When I used to work at a pet store, we fed some of the carnivorous fish feeder goldfish and minnows. They didn't last long. As for salt in fresh...I'm assuming the same thing.

after about 5 minutes the fish starts breathing VERY heavily. it freaks out and can be alive for many more minutes but fades away slowly. unless the freshwater fish is a molly or some other salt tolerating fish.... i would assume the same for salt fish going into fresh.

Wow, only a matter of minutes, thats actually pretty suprising to me, I would have thought maybe a half hour or so.

Now I know molly's are brackish, but would a molly be able to live in a full on satlwater setup?

EDIT ok I just saw your reply above, answered my question before i even got done typing it lol

Wonder what it is exactly about their biology that makes saltwater fish so intolerant to freshwater and vice versa. To above poster, did they live for a long time?
