I am trying to figure out what to get, so I am hoping I can get some feedback!

I have a 50 gallon fish tank had a motoro sting ray for about 2 years, until he died last year. (I dont know his size but was not to small or large. He ate allot just one day curled his stomach and died a few hours later) I am dying to get a new one. I saw on aquascape a beauitful Hystrix ( a balckish one) that to me I thought was and looked exactly like a motoro. I am not a fish expert and am dying to purchase that one.
1) are they harder to care for then a Motoro
2) $250 is that a normal price?
3) I know everyone sais a 70 gallon. Would my 50 do (its a long one) I had my motor for 2 years I dont think he died cause of tank size?
40 I dont have sand gravel. I have like small little (common one) gravel, would this be a propblem?
5) I currently have to med tricolor sharks (had them with the motoro) they should be fine but would my small tire eel be ok or do I have to get rid of the eel first?

Thanks so Much

I am no ray expert but Hystrix get 18 inches in diameter and Motoros get up to 32 inches. I believe so. I would have a 100 gallon for the hystrix and a 300 for the motoro and that should be plenty of space. Custom Tanks are the best for ray more length and width and less height.:headbang2
1) I have no idea
2) I have no idea, look at vendors prices
3) I think he/she died sooner because of tank size but how old was he/she?
4) Sand or bare bottom is the best for rays
5)hmm no idea

I have a 50 gallon fish tank had a motoro sting ray for about 2 years, until he died last year. IT DIED BECASUE IT WAS IN A 50 GALLON TANK... A 2 YEAR MOTORO IS AROUND 12-15" A 55 GALLON TANK IS USUALLY 12" WIDE :nilly: (I dont know his size but was not to small or large. He ate allot just one day curled his stomach and died a few hours later) I am dying to get a new one. I saw on aquascape a beauitful Hystrix ( a balckish one) that to me I thought was and looked exactly like a motoro. I am not a fish expert and am dying to purchase that one.
1) are they harder to care for then a Motoro (ANYTHING IS IN A 55 GALLON)
2) $250 is that a normal price?
3) I know everyone sais a 70 gallon. MORE LIKE 3-400 GALLON Would my 50 do (its a long one) I had my motor for 2 years I dont think he died cause of tank size? WHAT MAKES YOU SAY THAT??????? 40 I dont have sand gravel. I have like small little (common one) gravel, would this be a propblem?

YOU NEED TO FORGET ABOUT RAYS UNTIL YOU GET A BIGGER TANK..

(AND YES MY KEYBOARD IS BROKE) :)

Maybe Im mixing up. I had a motoro stingray (paid about 175) two years ago from my local fish store. He is very familiar with motor and has been selling them for years. mine was a small one and I was told its no problem to keep it in a 50 gallon tank. (it lived for two years) I hope im not mixin up names as they all loojk the same to me.

NO RAY IN A 55 FOR 2 YEARS...SORRY!

A BABY HYSTRIX CAN LIVE IN A 55 FOR CLOSE TO THAT AMOUNT OF TIME, BUT EVENTUALLY WILL OUTGROW IT... A 55 IS NOT ENOUGH DILUTION FOR A RAY TO LIVE HEALTHY FOR LONG.

you should just get a bigger tank, then your ray would be happy.

BTW WELCOME TO MFK

ok thanks for all your help. I guess I will have to hold out until I get bigger tank.
Curious as to regarding the original question if they are harder to take care of a Hystrix vs a Motoro

(btw the aqauriam in Camden NJ has beauitful nice size motoro in the petting tank. I have seen starfish and etc. but never motoro, they actually remove the stingers. )

Motoro I have heard is pretty easy to keeps.

As for the petting tank. You said a motoro with a star fish? A motoro is a freshwater ray..
