hi im new to this forum, however not new to the hobby. I found some Brazilian hystrix for sale a little while back and decided to “pull the trigger” and buy a pair, because of the strict regulations getting them in from Brazil. Who else has them? Pictures? Tank maTes? Tank size?

Welcome to rays! I have some hystrix. Bought the first one 10 or so years ago. Currently have 2. There are some pics on here of them. Tanks mates are tetras, a geo, and various catfishes.

Got a wild caught male and female that i have had for some years. And two young females born here. Tragically lost the biggest and oldest female some time ago, while she was giving birth.
I keep them in a 800 liter tank / 211 gallon.
Used to keep them with south american cichlids, but i don`t do that anymore as i started to notice and realise that the stingrays stressed them out too much. Specially annoying to watch at night when the cichlids needed rest. Guess you can eliminate that problem to an extent by keeping them in a bigger tank, and keep a limit to the amount of rays. Of course certain amounts of roots and stones may also help some.
Histrix is my absolute favorite stingray. They are cool looking with their tall body shape, nice pattern, and also they don`t get as big as most other stingrays.
Here is a picture of the female that is currently pregnant

Moved one of the young ones today and took a picture. Just have to share it. I think she got a extremely nice pattern. Starting to look like her mother.

Your mother ray was the best looking hystrix-period.
Hi I got mine through a guy in Facebook. I went with this species because I figured I can house a pair comfortably in a 265. Mine are on white sand and do not have the intense brown coloraztion that you guys have. I’m assuming it’s because of the substrate
