got a 6'x3' footprint on a large tank. current stock follows:
18" niger cat
9" irwini cat
10" fire eel
3" clown loaches x12
3" yoyo loaches x12
3" blood parrots x10

the parrots will be thinned out as they grow so no need for warnings on how messy 10 adults will be

build the tank for rays but never had the money for the black rays i wanted. bought some 'pretty fish' to please the wife and kid.
is it too late for a hystrix with these? ive heard they are soft skinned.

Really depends on your filtration. How strong is it? If u have good filtration+large volume of water then you shouldn't have to worry too much bout nitrates. My tank has way more bio load then yours and I have 2 semi big size marble motoros and I feed them twice a day and feed my other monsters every other day and my nitrates reach to about 30ppm by end of week before wc. Adding a hystrix should work but I would be worried bout it eating your loaches down the road. The hystrix would outgrow your loaches in no time as loaches are really slow growers. I also have a large group of CL's in my rays tank but mine are a lot larger then yours. Sizes ranging from 6"-8".

That tank is around 300 gallons. Add the bio load from those fish to the bioload of a ray, and you have a nitrate death trap.

if 24" height, it's a 260ish gallon.

i'm not super familiar with niger or irwini cats, so unsure of their temperaments, feeding habits, etc.
the clown loaches grow much slower, so they might end up getting eaten/topped, so you might need to move them if trouble arises. same with the yo-yo's.
the fire eel should be ok, sometimes they do become an expensive death with rays.
blood parrots shouldn't be an issue other than the bioload.

it's really all up to temperaments.

And this guy knows all about rays all of a sudden? reseasrch more thanks

as for the OP - It depends really man. how tall is your tank? water volume is also key to your system. what filtration are you running? if its a big 100+ gal sump filled full, then your filtration will probably be sufficient for a hystrix.. what turnover rate do you have? a big turnover is key to good filtration as well. just answer these simple questions to give us a better idea to help you. dont listen to to the person i quoted, as he clearly has no idea what he is talking about imo...

another thing needed answered.... what is your water change schedule? and are you running any live plants in your filtration? plants do take nitrates out of your water to help with filtration.

Loaches will take many years to reach a good size where a hystrix will take couple years to reach diameter 10+" if properly cared for. I would say some of my large loaches are 6-8 yrs old.

A tiny 3" pup would probably end up as lunch to his fire eel or cats.

Hi mate.
Right... Oxydoras Niger is like already mentioned a gentle giant...giant being the operative word. These cats have a huge body mass in relation to a rather small tubular mouth that is used for filtering out small seeds, molluscs etc, so from a compatible point of view these cats are fine, the bad new is they grow to well over 1mtr so you will eventually have to part with it, so its a short term thing with this one, expect18"-24" in the first 3 years.
Irwini...(Megladoras uranoscopus)..Love this species, I have just aquired 2 x 24" specimens to go in with the rays, these grow slower than the Nigers and generally attain 24" under captive conditions so these are more suitable, no problem at all regarding aggression, they are totally peaceful.
Clown loaches...I personally don't like adding these fish a ray tank due to the fact that they often don't like changes and are susceptible to white spot. These can potentially grow to 15" plus in the wild however eventual size is often governed by the size and stocking level of the aquaria, it is rare to find Clown loach larger than 10-12" in any domestic situation. If you do add these fish make sure they are of a good size so that the ray doesn't try to eat them, they have a defensive mechanism beneath the eye in the way of a sharp tusk, this can prove fatal if a ray gets the fish stuck in its throat, also male sure you install a UV sterilizer as most chemicals for Ick are detrimental to rays.
Yo yo Loaches (botia lohachata\Almorhae)..This is quite an inquisitive species so be careful it doesn't want to take a nibble or two out of the disc of a smal ray, all Botia species have very hard mouth which they use for cracking snail shells, this mouth can inflict significant injuries to soft finnage...be aware! The Pakistan loach which it is also commonly refered to grows to around 8" long, the same applies with the UV as with the Clown loach.
Man made Parrots...don't like them myself but each to their own, they do provide colour. This Hybrid is crossed with a Red devil (Amphilophus sp) because of this the temperament can be variable, in general I have found them to be no more aggressive than Heros Severus (Severums) which for me is a better choice along with the many Geophagus species available.
Fire eels...love these, never bother anything, often feed from the hand given time and are very agreeable with most fish.I have kept them at 30" plus even with fish that would easily fit into their mouths but had no problems...a nice addition!
Sorry about the long answer but had some time to kill....hope this helps.
All the best!

The tank is 25" =280g. Running 2 fx5, third will be added when needed. Temps around 78. Im not worried about the bioload, i have many people i buy, sell and trade with so there is always someone who will take any fish when i get over crowded. I bought my fish in bulk to fill the tank while they were small. I will have fewer fish as they grow. I got the niger 4 years ago, it was very malnurished, i doubt it will ever grow to full potential. I read that hystrix have a very small mouth and slow and small so i was hoping the loaches would outgrow its mouth. Ive also heard loaches like to bite on rays. I like my loaches more so i guess i will a avoid rays for a while, maybe when my loaches grow

I would take out all the loaches from the tank as they will pester the ray or once the ray is large enough will try to eat them, i would also take out some of the blood parrots due to bio-load and I personally don't like them that much

Where you getting the Hystrix ray from?
